Synopsis
Laura Bianchi is twenty-eight, with a degree, three and a half languages and twelve hundred euros in the bank. She carries canederli at a mountain refuge in Val Gardena and says “it’s fine” to everything, because she learned early that words, once they’re out, can be used against her.
Thomas Gruber is thirty-nine. He left a knee in the safety nets at Wengen during a World Cup downhill, and he has a mountain hut at two thousand one hundred metres to open before Christmas. He needs someone to help him; she needs the money. Three days of work, double pay.
Then the snow comes earlier than expected, and Christmas Eve finds them shut in up there, with a fireplace, an old table and the supplies of six German tourists.
He promises he will never make the first move.
She has never asked for anything for herself.
But for the first time, someone tells her she’s doing well. And asks her to make some noise.
The Last Snow is a spin-off novella in the Medals & Kisses series, telling how Laura, the fourth member of the team in The Last Stone, found her way back to the ice. It can also be read on its own.
